Plasmids are small circularDNA molecules; they are DNA molecules that replicate autonomously independently of the bacterial chromosome. Plasmid size varies greatly, ranging from a few to hundreds ofkb. Plasmids rely on proteins provided by the host cell for replication, but they can also enable the host cell to acquire plasmid-encoded functions. Plasmid replication can be synchronized with the bacterial cell cycle, resulting in a low plasmid copy number in the bacterial cell; plasmid replication can also be independent of the cell cycle, allowing hundreds to thousands of plasmid copies to be amplified in each bacterial cell.
